MAR 21Angels Watching Over Us

For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. (Ps. 91:11)

Bertha Smith, from Cowpens, South Carolina, was a Southern Baptist missionary in China during the Chinese Revolution in the province of Shantung. Smith lived to the ripe old age of 99, and she tells her life story in works published by Broadman Press. Smith and a famous missionary family, the Culpepers, along with many others, were living in a missionary compound that was attacked by Chinese warlords during the revolution. The warlords were riding horses in their cavalry unit when they approached the house where Smith and the others were located. But the attack was called to a halt when their terrified horses reared up and refused to go no further.

Years later, she met the warlord soldiers, some of whom became Christians. She asked them why, on that day, they did not take the house but instead turned around and went in the other direction. The warlords told her that they saw gigantic creatures standing at the four corners of the house. They said they were so big that their feet were on the house and their heads were in the heavens.

God's children live with the assistance of unseen divine intelligence when they live in communion with the Almighty. Biblically, we see several examples of this. Elijah saw the invisible intelligence agents of God and identified them as chariots of fire (2 Kings 2:11). Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were protected by this invisible intelligence when they walked through the fiery furnace unharmed (Dan. 3:25-27). But God's invisible protection is not just limited to the past. God still protects us in the present, and He also will in the future. Our protection does not depend upon our own steadfastness, but rather on God's intention to preserve the power and majesty of His name.

Lord God, we are blessed by the seemingly invisible protection that You offer us on a daily basis through Your ministering angels. We will probably never know on this side of eternity just how many times You've used them to save us from certain death, or even just to keep our feet from falling. Thank You for assigning them to guard us! Amen.
